Radiohead album title
In a very obvious swipe at George W Bush, Radiohead have decided to call their new album 'Hail to the Thief'. Expect the US website Hail-to-the-thief to get a lot of hits in the next few weeks, at least it'll remind us how dodgy that election was. Anyway, tracklisting is as follows:

The story was broken on Pitchfork. It seems that the arrest has little to do with their political leanings, and more to do with a Texan petrol station attendant not liking the look of them and being jumpy enough to get the FBI on the case. "it's just the feeling in the country right now", said Bruce Adams from Kranky.

War-blogs
Talking of petitions, it is worth remembering that the online anti-war petition to the UN raised 550,000 signatures, only to be ignored (in the same way the authority of the UN was ignored) by the warmongers.
There are so many other blogs and livejournals that provide sane, propaganda-free war comment that I don't really feel that I can add very much. By mid-morning all western news correspondents in Iraq were subject to Iraqi state censorship - a minder from the government watched them file all their reports. Bear in mind that they are also subject to British government reporting restrictions and you wonder how much truth you will really hear about this war. Blogs from Baghdad like this one which I found yesterday are as close to what is really happening as you may get. They may not have the resources (or dare I say, the authority) of the major news organisations but they are thankfully free from censorship.
I'm more likely to link to these sorts of things and let the story be told that way.
On a more positive note, I was heartened to see so many students and schoolkids protest outside Belfast City Hall today. Let's hope people are listening.......

No "No Disco"?
The powers that be at RTE, Irelands national broadcaster, have decided not to renew No Disco, a popular late night alternative music program. No Disco has been an extremely important utility for the local music community in Ireland who now have no other television program on which to show their wares.
If you feel RTE is grossly wrong in cancelling this show, please follow this link and add your name to this online petition

David Kitt vs the shushers
On Saturday I went along to see David Kitt in the Empire in Belfast. I 'm not sure how I had managed to go so long without encountering this guy but I was pretty impressed with his performance, in particular the way he tends to charm the crowd. He played two sets, everything from acoustic material with some backing beats to full band work-outs. I think I prefer the low-key stuff as the final improv-style piece came across as a bit of a poor man's Sonic Youth.
Overall though he has some very strong songs and most of 'the Big Romance' was played, as well as a ton of new material.
The thing that struck me as odd was the audience. The venue was absolutely packed, it cost £12.50 to get in and everyone seemed to be very into the music. With a large crowd like that you do expect a bit of chatter, none of it seemed to distract David Kitt, and in fact at times during the acoustic songs the venue was very quiet. However, just beside us were a gang of aggressive shushers who were on the offensive the minute anyone spoke during a song. I am very against talking during quiet gigs but I thought the constant shushing was actually more annoying at this show.

ENON + BLOODTHIRSTY LOVERS tonight

Presented by Skibunny, ENON is John Schmersal, Toko Yasuda and Matt Schutz. Together they forge some traditional rock vocabulary together with samples, electronic creations and an "anything goes" attitude. It¹s a celebration of technology for certain, but not at the expense of the actual songs.
John Schmersal cut his teeth in Brainiac, the Dayton Ohio freakoutfit. After their sad demise John moved to New York City. Debut LP 'Believo' was released in 2000 and much hoopla has since commenced. Toko (previously with Blonde Redhead and The Lapse) and Matt joined in 2001. The addition of Toko on vocals and songwriting has opened up an entire new world of pop frequencies and the resulting new LP 'High Society' (recorded by Eli Janney of Girls Against Boys fame) is a breath of fresh air to human ears.
BLOODTHIRSTY LOVERS are a 3-piece featuring David Shouse, a Memphis music maestro known largely for his time spent heading up The Grifters (Southern/Sub Pop) and Those Bastard Souls (V2). Their self-titled debut LP is released in February 2003 on the Frenchkiss label. (Trainspotter fact: Frenchkiss is run by Syd Butler of Les Savy Fav.)

Here we are again!
After much head-scratching and the realisation that the new design actually sucks I have resorted back to good old Blogger! The archives and all new material will move to the new hosts but I don't really feel the need to kill off the blog yet - also the previews page was working pretty well so expect it to return to its pop-up free format very soon.
This blog will also be updated more regularly and the archives will be sorted out a bit.
Looking back on my last few months of posts here, it seem that I ran out of steam around the time of BelFEST, in fact I failed to finish any of my reviews frm that event! As I have mentioned before, I have been moving house and I lost track of things a little but hopefully it's all back on course again.

•Three astonishing gigs by Torgas Valley Reds - well, two astonishing (Menagerie and Empire) and one very good! (Front Page) - if you don't know by now, the TVR are the people who used to be Backwater with a new name and a new set of songs
•Marion and Geoff on BBC2, absolutely unmissable, also The Book Group on Channel 4, the first series of which passed me by, but I've got into it now.
•The Mountain Goats album has been given a UK release on 4AD
•Gangs of New York - primarily for Daniel Day Lewis's performance and great set design
and the Teenage Fanclub best of is out, complete with a fine show in Belfast the other week
•Catpower's Flashy new website - (and fine new album)
and crap things...
•no broadband til Thursday 20th Feb- hence no site updates!
•warmongers

Lots going on, honest!
Check the gig previews page for details - but in brief coming up tonight is the first Blueprint featuring Throat, Torgas Valley Reds and Los Cabras, tomorrow is the monthly Howl club at the New Orpheus and Saturday is the launch of Nova Wreck issue 5 at the Front Page featuring Yakuza and Torgas Valley Reds amongst others. Hopefully I will get time to tidy this post later.

I had hoped that my plan would make it diverse if only 3 or 4 people voted but I ended up with fifteen widely varying lists, I also noticed that a lot of my choices weren't going to count so I didn't include my own in the vote - I have a separate chin-stroker list on the way! It's that time of year again!
Yes, I'm still here but I'm in the middle of moving house and I've been completely bogged down with collating the reader's poll/ albums of the year - it will be up here on the 1st or 2nd along with my own review of the year. I never see the point in posting these things til the year is finally over. There are some very bizarre choices in a lot of end of year polls and Peel's Festive 50 was disappointing too [No web link to it yet I'm afraid]. The Wire have Sonic Youth's Murray Street at number one, which is weird because alothough it's my most listened to record this year I didn't think it was that highly rated.
Just about recovered from Christmas festivities, two great nights at Auntie Annies in particular - the long awaited debut of Josh Mills and the Olympic Lifts Xmas party with Go Commando and Tracer AMC.

Well and truly into the silly season
Lots and lots of going out to do, and a website to update before the end of the year! Polls are happening left, right and centre - details of ours is on the message board. If you want to know what all the other zines and weblogs are choosing there's a good thread over at I Love Music which collects a lot of the lists together.
I went to a great show last night - The National, Desert Hearts and Barry Peak played Auntie Annies - the sound was the best I had ever heard in there and all of the acts were great. The National had driven from London to Belfast and hadn't had any sleep, despite this they won a lot of people over, though I think their record is even better than their live show. Desert Hearts were also the worse for wear, but they were stunning - the best gig I've seen them play although I'm sure they won't believe me!

December always turns out to be a bit busy on the events front. Tonight our work Xmas party conflicts with Suede and Doves free Witnness bash at the Mandela Hall (all tickets snaffled I'm afraid) and the very tempting Monkey vs Robot club at the Menagerie. Mary Hansen of Stereolab has died
I'm very sad to hear that Mary Hansen of Stereolab has been killed in a cycling accident in London. I had met her on both Stereolab's visits to Belfast, and then when I moved to London she seemed to be an ever present fixture on the gig going front. I know a lot of people are going to miss her.
A formal announcement is on the Stereolab site, the news story can be found at the NME.

BelFEST
This year was the first time I had been in Belfast for BelFEST and I made the most of it, I saw around 15 acts. It was odd that I thought a lot of the solo acts stole the show - Kidd Dynamo on his own, Robyn Shiels and Barry Peak in particular. One negative side to the whole thing is that the accompanying CD hasn't made into the shops yet and the festival is over. It's quite ironic that when I lived in London people had no trouble getting me copies!
It's nearly end-of-year round-up time, although I always refuse to publish mine until January in case I discover something too late to include. We're running a reader's poll as opposed to a simple albums list like last year, the details are on the message board now. Closing date 31 December.

Post-Mascis, pre-BelFEST
I thought that J Mascis was great at Belfast Limelight last night - excellent guitar playing, some strong new material and classic Dinosaur tunes to keep everyone happy. Spotted in the crowd - Kevin Shields and Ryan Adams. Kevin was there because his brother Jimi was the support act and he didn't join in with Mascis's set as many had hoped. In fact the whole Shields family were there and were sitting right in front of me. I hadn't heard of Jimi Shields since the demise of his band Rollerskate Skinny, and now that he is back in business I'm tempted to upload an old interview I did with them (Weedbus 7 I think).
Tomorrow (or later today by the time I post this!) BelFEST kicks off. There are 16 bands playing for free at four venues on Wednesday 27. For more details check their website. It looks like we'll be doing something like this....

I thought that J Mascis was great at Belfast Limelight last night - excellent guitar playing, some strong new material and classic Dinosaur tunes to keep everyone happy. Spotted in the crowd - Kevin Shields and Ryan Adams. Kevin was there because his brother Jimi was the support act and he didn't join in with Mascis's set as many had hoped. In fact the whole Shields family were there and were sitting right in front of me. I hadn't heard of Jimi Shields since the demise of his band Rollerskate Skinny, and now that he is back in business I'm tempted to upload an old interview I did with them (Weedbus 7 I think).
Tomorrow (or later today by the time I post this!) BelFEST kicks off. There are 16 bands playing for free at four venues on Wednesday 27. For more details check their website. It looks like we'll be doing something like this....

10.15 Katys - Go Commando, maybe catch a bit of Los Cabras

Gig previews page - now working
Post your own event details at the new previews page. The suggested format is "Name/ Venue/ Date" in the subject line, with prices, times etc in the message. I'll also be using it to post info that I have been emailed as well, but feel free to post your own!

The Feline Dream - now in Belfast Limelight
Yes, the Feline Dream show this Sunday (17th Nov) has been moved from the Empire to the Limelight. More details at www.felinedream.co.uk.
Apologies for the lack of updates, but I've been tinkering around with the inner workings of the site. The first results of this are the imminent reintroduction of the 'previews' page, where you can post your own event details. It should be ready to use early next week.
Other developments? Well, in the next couple of weeks you can expect some pruning of the archives, some new reviews and interviews, maybe even a new front page! Hopefully we will be able to include some audio on the site - specifically from unsigned bands who lack a bit of web presence. More info soon.
