Well.... The holiday season continues around here with a trip to Dublin to see Massive Attack and Goldfrapp, but Belfast is showing signs of life next week with gigs by Malcolm Middleton, Interpol, The Gossip, as well as two of the best local bands - Tracer AMC and Desert Hearts. Details of most of these on the gig previews page as the council are probably painting over the flyposters as I type.

Yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon....
Well, actually I didn't because I thought Radiohead's show at the Waterfront in Belfast was pretty damn good, I just had that song stuck in my head ever since. I've since heard a few grumbles from a few people about the gig but from where I was sitting (front balcony in the centre) it looked and sounded excellent. There may have been a few occasional leaps in level when the fx pedals kicked in but I almost convinced myself that this was deliberate. The set was dominated by 'Hail to the Thief' so I was at an advantage in that I've had a copy of it for a few weeks now.
Low points? - hardly any, except for the false start on 'Airbag' and the omission of 'Pyramid Song'.
High points? many - 'There There' started the set with THREE drummers, a new version of 'Kid A', mighty versions of 'Dollars and Cents', 'Paranoid Android' and 'Idioteque' in particular, the silence in the hall at the start of 'Exit Music', and so many great new songs.
Here's the set list for those who are interested in such things....
There There/ 2+2=5/ I Might Be Wrong/ Exit Music/ Scatterbrain/ Kid A/ Airbag/ Subterranean Homesick Alien/ Backdrifts/ Sail to the Moon/ Dollars and Cents/ Go To Sleep/ Myxomatosis/ Where I End and You Begin/ Paranoid Android/ Idioteque/ Everything in its Right Place. First set of encores - The Gloaming/ A Punch up at a Wedding/ Just/ Fake Plastic Trees, second set of encores - Sit Down Stand Up/ Lucky. If that's inaccurate blame my memory!

In awe of Patti Smith again
I was amazed the first time I saw Patti Smith and her Band in 2001 (read how amazed here!), and her recent show with Oliver Ray at the Art College in Belfast was also stunning. A big thank you to Paul for the last minute ticket!
Proper review when I get it together but here's some of what she played
Piss Factory/ Hey Joe/ Redondo Beach/ Beneath the Southern Cross/ Dog Dream/ Wing/ Dancing Barefoot/ Because The Night/ Ghost Dance/ This Dead City/ Paths That Cross/ People Have the Power/ Pissing In A River/ Gloria/ Be My Baby.

Anyone got a spare Patti Smith ticket?
Yes, due to a last minute change of plan which means that I will actually be in Belfast tomorrow night, I am desperately seeking a ticket for Patti Smith's show at the Conor Hall. If you have one to sell please email me - jonathan@slowthrills.com - or reply here.
At least I have the choice of Four Tet (Menagerie), Richard Fearless (Front Page) or Howl (details on gig page) if I'm still ticketless!

Nina Simone has died
You kind of get immune to the TV news, but the archive clips of Nina Simone that resurfaced to accompany the announcements of her death, left me feeling very sad. I first saw that film of her show at Ronnie Scotts on TV late one night when I was still at school and it was something of a revelation. Most people of my age group were only aware of her hit 'My Baby Just Cares for Me' which ironically she never cared for, so the likes of 'Mississippi Goddamn' and 'Young Gifted and Black' were an unforgettable journey into perviously unchartered territory for me.
There are many lucid print and online tributes to Nina since she died so I'll just add a few words. I got interested in her work again a couple of years ago when Jacob Golden adopted a few of her songs into his solo residency at the 12 Bar in Covent Garden. 'The Other Woman' was another stunning song I had never heard until that night.
As Jacob said when I interviewed him a while back "I was really obsessed with Nina for a couple of years and I just spent a lot of time enjoying her records and exporing how she has such a beautiful way of just creating this space when she's singing. It's kind of perfect, she's just a master at what she does and I'm a massive fan of hers." (*)
I once remember her saying how she didn't listen to anyone nowadays other than Oscar Peterson because he was the only musician she considered as a 'master'. One listen her strongest material - for example, her version of Billie Holliday's 'Strange Fruit' - would make you praise her in those same terms.

Amended contact details
Due to the unbelievable amount of spam I'm receiving I have been advised to alter my visible email address on the site. The address is still the same, so all it means is that if you're emailing me via the "contact" link above, you have to remove the letters "NOSPAM" from the address. Simple really!

updates piling up - sorry!

So, some stuff last week....
It seems kind of far away at the moment as the world turns its attention here, but there was a lot of good stuff going last week.  We had Vis:onic at Belfast Art College, three days of audio-visual collaborations, the highlight for me was seeing a stunning show by Manitoba - now playing as a group and doing a neat line in twin drumkits and bear masks - ably supported by a much improved Clone Quartet. 'Proper' review soon!
Friday was our first time at
Howl in the Orpheus.  I had been meaning to get to this for a long time, but it took the promise of a solo set by Sarah Dougher (formerly of Cadallaca and the Crabs) to finally reel me in. What can I say? Great music, nice visuals, and a cool fanzine at the door. It may have been the first time I was there, it won't be the last.

War and Peace?
It feels so strange today as Bush and Blair are meeting in my home town (Hillsborough, Co Down) over the next two days.  My Mum was on the phone last night giving off about the helicopters, but in Belfast all I have noticed is occasionally disrupted traffic.
First impressions suggest that this is a war summit, as Colin Powell, Condoleeza Rice and Jack Straw are all in the gang, so our fragile peace process may not get a look in. If Northern Ireland doesn't make it to the agenda, the summit will be an even more cynical attempt to juggle war and peace than I had previously thought.
The big protest against these two did materialise - the protestors making their way along the empty dual carriageway on foot.

Protest Records
If you haven't heard of this since the war started, you should check out Protest Records, the online mp3 label run by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and New York web designer Chris Habib.  News story on the label is here

Radiohead album title
In a very obvious swipe at George W Bush, Radiohead have decided to call their new album 'Hail to the Thief'. Expect the US website Hail-to-the-thief to get a lot of hits in the next few weeks, at least it'll remind us how dodgy that election was. Anyway, tracklisting is as follows:
2 + 2 = 5/ Sit Down Stand Up/ Sail To The Moon/ Backdrifts/ Go To Sleep/ Where I End And You Begin/ We Suck Young Blood/ The Gloaming/ There There/ I Will/ A Punch-Up at a Wedding/ Myxomatosis/ Scatterbrain/ A Wolf At The Door.
Did I mention I was lucky enough to get tickets for their Belfast show? Really looking forward to that.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor questioned as suspected terrorists
The story was broken on Pitchfork. It seems that the arrest has little to do with their political leanings, and more to do with a Texan petrol station attendant not liking the look of them and being jumpy enough to get the FBI on the case. "it's just the feeling in the country right now", said Bruce Adams from Kranky.
Meanwhile, they've put a new live recording up on the net, it's called 'Albania' and is available here

Massive Attack's 3D innocent of internet porn offences
The NME has the exclusive on this story here.
I wonder if the tabloids will feature it as prominently as they did when he was arrested?

The save No Disco petitionis nearing 1100 signatures and stil growing....

Today's anti-war link is a free mp3 from Zack de la Rocha and DJ Shadow called March of Death. Not usually my cup of tea, but worth a listen anyway.

In a break from all this tonight I'm hoping to see The Embers and Morph play a free gig in QUB - details here

War-blogs
Talking of petitions, it is worth remembering that the online anti-war petition to the UN raised 550,000 signatures, only to be ignored (in the same way the authority of the UN was ignored) by the warmongers.
There are so many other blogs and livejournals that provide sane, propaganda-free war comment that I don't really feel that I can add very much. By mid-morning all western news correspondents in Iraq were subject to Iraqi state censorship - a minder from the government watched them file all their reports. Bear in mind that they are also subject to British government reporting restrictions and you wonder how much truth you will really hear about this war. Blogs from Baghdad like this one which I found yesterday are as close to what is really happening as you may get. They may not have the resources (or dare I say, the authority) of the major news organisations but they are thankfully free from censorship.
I'm more likely to link to these sorts of things and let the story be told that way.
On a more positive note, I was heartened to see so many students and schoolkids protest outside Belfast City Hall today. Let's hope people are listening.......
No "No Disco"?
The powers that be at RTE, Irelands national broadcaster, have decided not to renew No Disco, a popular late night alternative music program. No Disco has been an extremely important utility for the local music community in Ireland who now have no other television program on which to show their wares.

If you feel RTE is grossly wrong in cancelling this show, please follow this link and add your name to this online petition

David Kitt vs the shushers
On Saturday I went along to see David Kitt in the Empire in Belfast. I 'm not sure how I had managed to go so long without encountering this guy but I was pretty impressed with his performance, in particular the way he tends to charm the crowd. He played two sets, everything from acoustic material with some backing beats to full band work-outs. I think I prefer the low-key stuff as the final improv-style piece came across as a bit of a poor man's Sonic Youth.
Overall though he has some very strong songs and most of 'the Big Romance' was played, as well as a ton of new material.
The thing that struck me as odd was the audience. The venue was absolutely packed, it cost £12.50 to get in and everyone seemed to be very into the music. With a large crowd like that you do expect a bit of chatter, none of it seemed to distract David Kitt, and in fact at times during the acoustic songs the venue was very quiet. However, just beside us were a gang of aggressive shushers who were on the offensive the minute anyone spoke during a song. I am very against talking during quiet gigs but I thought the constant shushing was actually more annoying at this show.

ENON + BLOODTHIRSTY LOVERS tonight
Thursday 13th March 2003, 9.00pm / The Empire Music Hall, Belfast / Tickets £6.50 should be some on the door.
Presented by Skibunny, ENON is John Schmersal, Toko Yasuda and Matt Schutz. Together they forge some traditional rock vocabulary together with samples, electronic creations and an "anything goes" attitude. It¹s a celebration of technology for certain, but not at the expense of the actual songs.
John Schmersal cut his teeth in Brainiac, the Dayton Ohio freakoutfit. After their sad demise John moved to New York City. Debut LP 'Believo' was released in 2000 and much hoopla has since commenced. Toko (previously with Blonde Redhead and The Lapse) and Matt joined in 2001. The addition of Toko on vocals and songwriting has opened up an entire new world of pop frequencies and the resulting new LP 'High Society' (recorded by Eli Janney of Girls Against Boys fame) is a breath of fresh air to human ears.
BLOODTHIRSTY LOVERS are a 3-piece featuring David Shouse, a Memphis music maestro known largely for his time spent heading up The Grifters (Southern/Sub Pop) and Those Bastard Souls (V2). Their self-titled debut LP is released in February 2003 on the Frenchkiss label. (Trainspotter fact: Frenchkiss is run by Syd Butler of Les Savy Fav.)

This gig is also part of DigitalT. More stuff on Enon can be found on their official site

**** btw, future gig posts can be found (and actually made by yourselves!) on the gig previews page****

Here we are again!
After much head-scratching and the realisation that the new design actually sucks I have resorted back to good old Blogger! The archives and all new material will move to the new hosts but I don't really feel the need to kill off the blog yet - also the previews page was working pretty well so expect it to return to its pop-up free format very soon.
This blog will also be updated more regularly and the archives will be sorted out a bit.

Looking back on my last few months of posts here, it seem that I ran out of steam around the time of BelFEST, in fact I failed to finish any of my reviews frm that event! As I have mentioned before, I have been moving house and I lost track of things a little but hopefully it's all back on course again.

Polls and stuff
I have spent quite a while collating your contributions for the reader's poll, cursing myself for making it so complicated! I had hoped that my plan would make it diverse if only 3 or 4 people voted but I ended up with fifteen widely varying lists, I also noticed that a lot of my choices weren't going to count so I didn't include my own in the vote - I have a separate chin-stroker list on the way! Here is your discerning and diverse top 40....

1= Wilco Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
1= The Streets Original Pirate Material
3. The Flaming Lips Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots
4. EL-P Fantastic Damage
5. Boards Of Canada Geogaddi
6. Sonic Youth Murray Street
7. Lambchop Is A Woman
8. Liars They Threw Us All In A Trench...
9. Sleater-Kinney One Beat
10. Tom Waits Alice
11. Beck Sea Change
12=. Spoon Kill The Moonlight
12=. And you will know us by the Trail of Dead Source Codes and Tags
14. Tom Waits Blood Money
15. DJ/Rupture Minesweeper Suite
16. Interpol Turn On The Bright Lights
17. Akufen My Way
18. Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man Out Of Season

Surprised? I thought the top end turned out quite predictably but there was nice variety lower down. For the life of me I have no idea who the Books or Pretty Girls make Graves are, but they got votes from three separate people so there you go. Comments on the message board if you like....

Oh, and John Peel's Festive 50 is now listed online.
